Case

SYNTAX: grammatical feature distinguishing, among other functions, subject and (direct) object. In many languages case is morphonologically visible. In English and Dutch, morphonological case is only visible in the pronominal system (he vs. him etc.) The distinction between structural case and inherent case is that inherent case is tied to a specific thematic interpretation. In the Principles and Parameters framework, case is thought to play a role in the distribution of (overt) NP argument. See Case filter.
