Echo question

SYNTAX: question which copies a declarative sentence and contains a wh-phrase in situ. EXAMPLE: the question in (ii) echoes the declarative in (i) with a question intonation, but without the usual wh-movement.

(i) John bought <mumble-mumble>
(ii) John bought WHAT?
This type of question is usually considered irrelevant in the discussion of wh-movement (What did John buy?) and wh-in-situ (Who bought what?).
