Formant

PHONETICS: A peak of resonance in the vocal tract. Every configuration of the vocal tract has its own set of characteristic formant frequencies. Each formant has a centre frequency: frequency where the amplification is maximal. These peaks only incidentally coincide with a harmonic of the fundamental frequency.
