Split-Morphology Hypothesis

MORPHOLOGY: hypothesis which entails that derivation and inflection are distinct, and belong to separate components of the grammar. Derivation is handled by lexical rules, while (regular) inflection is handled by syntactic rules. The Split-Morphology Hypothesis has been endorsed by Anderson (1977,1982,1988) Scalise (1984,1988), and Perlmutter (1988).
